Adding A Third Column To Blogger

If you're interested in adding a third column to your free blogger template, search no more. Our blogger tutorials will teach you everything you need to turn your two column blog into a three column blog.

Not only will we show you how to quickly and easily add a third column, but we will show you how to position your new column too. Do you want a new sidebar to the left of the main post? Or do you want your new sidebar to be to the right of the new post, next to the existing sidebar? Or do you want FOUR columns??

Customize Your Blogger Layout

There are many free third-party, three-column template downloads available online. However, downloading hacks can create several disadvantages. First, you may be disappointed with the specific template design, and if so you will not have the knowledge to modify it. Also, to the extent you've already customized your Blogger layout, you may lose all of those customizations if you download a hack. Adding all those customizations back can be a painstaking waste of time.

Also, many free templates have not been updated and that means they will contain outdated, incompatible code. Worse, some unscrupulous programmers may have embedded malicious code within their templates. There's no reason to take these risks, because modifying your existing Blogger template really isn't all that hard.

The Advantage of Free Blogger Templates

The free templates provided by Blogger are current and up to date, and there is no risk of harming your computer. Blogger updates, when they inevitably occur, will still support your existing Blogger template even if you've customized it, but they may not be so kind to a third party work-around. What's more, I guarantee you that you will get to the point of wanting to customize your blog template, and the knowledge you will gain from adding a third column on your blog will give you the confidence and knowledge you need to succeed in customizing it even further. This approach gives you total control over the layout and look of your blog.

If you have an existing blog and merely want to expand the template to include another column, our tutorials will be extremely helpful. The sole focus of Three Column Blogger is to show you how to add a new sidebar to your Blogger template - that's it. Tutorials on adding columns and sidebars is all we write about. Our tutorials will also show you how to adjust the margins and padding and other things incidental to adding a new column or sidebar.

Add a Third Column to Blogger Easily

So if adding a third column to your blogger template is what you want to do, you've come to the right place. Our tutorials will show you how to add a third column to any free blogger template quickly and easily. We offer step by step, template-specific instructions. No more guessing or translating from one three-column tutorial to another. We show you specifically how to add a third column to YOUR blogger template. We look forward to helping you achieve your third column nirvanna soon!

Hi. I tried adding a 3rd column to my dots layout and as you can see, there is a big space in between the left and middle. I think i changed something to do that when i had just two columns so it would align perfectly with my banner. But now i can't figure out how to get rid of that space. I haven't decided if i want a sliver between each column or no space at all, but either would be better than how it is now.

Also, i changed it so the widths would be fluid instead of fixed, but it's not reaching the edges. I would like margins, but not as big as they are now, just big enough to have the background pattern function as a border. Help?

I see that you switched to Moto Rising and have your three columns. It looks good, congrats! I will definitely post a Dots tutorial in the future and thanks for reading.

Cheers, RW

I went through the hassle of creating a WordPress blog, importing the content, editing the screwed up HTML in all the posts I imported over, and then realized how limited WordPress is in customizing (even adding widgets) on their free account. Not to mention limitations in what you can add in your posts. I wanted a cleaner, nicer looking template, but when all is said and done, a third column would probably satisfy me just as well. Glad I found this.

Hi RW,

This looks like it is a great tutorial! I do have a couple questions though.
I changed my test blog, (mycookiesandcream.blogspot.com) to three-column using a different, confusing tutorial, and now I cannot upload a picture into the header and have it show on the blog. I'm not completely concerned about that, but if you have an answer to that, that would be fantastic!

My more important question is, if I change my main blog, (jewelsbyjulia-lauren.blogspot.com) to three-column using your tutorial, will I be able to still have an image at the top for a header?

Have a wonderful day,
Miss Julia

Julia, I used this tutorial to add a third column to one of my templates and never had any issues with it. I never tried to upload a header image, but I used the same principles that are shown in this post to make a wider post column in this blog: http://amusedspectator.blogspot.com and as you can see, it has a header image. I'm not sure what you could have done to make it impossible to see a header image, unless it has something to do with hosting graphics and using them as backgrounds. That 'may' prevent a header image from showing up. Honestly, you may have an easier time starting from scratch with a fresh template, first noting your favorite colors/widths/etc, making all the changes on a test blog, and then uploading the template to your main blog when you have it just how you want it.

Oh, and I just took a look at your site. You should DEFINITELY switch to 3 columns. It looks much too cluttered. You might also want change how many posts show on the main page, after you switch to 3 columns.

This is a decent site but if you want more detailed tutorials on a wider variety of topics, go here:

I'm hurt. Decent? Bloggerbuster??

Well, let me rephrase.

This site is excellent when it comes to the specific category of modification it's designed to inform the reader of, which is changing column widths and adding columns.

Blogger Buster goes into more detail on things like adding widget areas to the header and footer, moving the header and footer out of the outer wrapper, etc etc. More technical stuff.

Actually, I'd love a third column in stretch denim as well; Content in the center, and a sidebar on left and right...can you help? I just followed your easy directions for my wife's blog using your "rounders" instructions and they were dead on! Thanks for that. I used your tutorial and to add a third column and it looks great! But now I have a problem - when I send out a link to a new post in my blog, it picks up my 'about me' description instead of the new post info - any thoughts about what I'm doing wrong? www.tdavio.blogspot.com

Hey, Quite a while back, I changed my blog using your code. Now I get a msg in my header from Photobucket that your account is inactive. It only shows up in IE. Can you tell me what to do to get rid of that msg?

thanks!

TXsharon - big apologies. Believe it or not, somebody tried to reset my photobucket account, so Photobucket deactivated my account. I just now reset it, and the account has been reactivated. I will keep a closer watch on my Photobucket account, and ultimately load these images to my own host so there are no problems. Thanks for your patience and Happy Thanksgiving!

Cheers, RW

I've got a template that is not one of the "free blogspot" templates, but I really like the looks of it. I have the html code, but I haven't a clue how to enlarge it from 2 column to 3 column.

Is there a resource I can find that would help me figure out what to change?
